Britton Summary

Britton is a small village located in Lenawee County, Michigan. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, about 25 miles from the Ohio border. The village has a population of approximately 1,400 people and covers an area of 1.2 square miles.

History

The area that is now known as Britton was first settled in 1832 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “New York Corners” and was later renamed “Britton” after the first postmaster, William Britton. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Britton was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a cider mill, and a cheese factory. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
