Temple Hills Summary

Temple Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The population was 8,895 at the 2010 census. It is located near the larger communities of Oxon Hill and Suitland.

History

The area now known as Temple Hills was originally part of the larger community of Oxon Hill. In the early 20th century, the area was known as “Temple Hill” and was home to a small African-American community. The name was changed to “Temple Hills” in the 1950s when the area was developed as a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.

Geography

Temple Hills is located at 38°48'17" North, 76°57'45" West (38.804722, -76.962500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Temple Hills is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several government agencies, including the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,895 people, 3,541 households, and 2,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,039.3 people per square mile (1,561.2/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 1,717.3/sq mi (662.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 11.2% White, 79.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 25.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $30,938 for females.
