Odenton Summary

Odenton is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 37,132 at the 2010 census. Odenton is located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and is part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

History

Odenton was first settled in the early 19th century. The town was named after Oden Bowie, the Governor of Maryland from 1869 to 1872. The town was officially incorporated in 1888.
In the early 20th century, Odenton was a rural farming community. In the 1950s, the area began to experience rapid growth due to the construction of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and the development of the Washington, D.C. suburbs.

Geography

Odenton is located at 39°6′17″N 76°41′17″W (39.104722, -76.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.72%) is water.

Economy

Odenton is home to several major employers, including the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, the National Security Agency, and the U.S. Army's Fort Meade. The area is also home to several technology companies, including Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and Booz Allen Hamilton.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 28,639 people, 10,845 households, and 7,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,567.3 people per square mile (989.7/km2). There were 11,093 housing units at an average density of 997.2 per square mile (385.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.45% White, 22.45% African American, 0.37% Native American, 4.45% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.90% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 6.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $71,845. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
