Maryland City Summary

Maryland City is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 17,556 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Maryland City was first settled in the early 1700s by English settlers. The area was originally known as “The Woods” and was part of the larger area of Anne Arundel County. In the late 1800s, the area was developed as a residential community and was known as “Maryland City”. The name was chosen to honor the state of Maryland.
In the early 1900s, the area was home to a number of small businesses, including a general store, a post office, and a blacksmith shop. The area was also home to a number of farms, which provided food for the local population.
In the 1950s, the area began to experience rapid growth as the population of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area increased. This growth was fueled by the construction of the nearby Baltimore-Washington Parkway, which provided easy access to the area.
In the late 1960s, the area was annexed by the City of Laurel, Maryland. This annexation allowed for the development of the area into a suburban community.

Geography

Maryland City is located at 39°7′17″N 76°45′45″W (39.1214, -76.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Maryland City is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The area is also home to a number of government offices, including the Anne Arundel County Police Department and the Maryland State Police.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 17,556 people, 6,845 households, and 4,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,093.3 people per square mile (1,579.2/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,664.3 per square mile (642.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 22.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,917, and the median income for a family was $72,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $37,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,917. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
