Leonardtown Summary
Leonardtown is a town located in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of St. Mary’s County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. The population was 2,930 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Leonardtown was first settled in 1654 by English colonists. The town was named after Leonard Calvert, the first colonial governor of Maryland. The town was officially incorporated in 1708.
During the American Revolution, Leonardtown was a major supply center for the Continental Army. The town was also the site of a major battle in 1781, when British forces attempted to capture the town. The British were ultimately unsuccessful and the town remained in American hands.
In the 19th century, Leonardtown was a major center of the tobacco industry. The town was also home to a number of prominent families, including the Boarman, Briscoe, and Darnall families.
Geography
Leonardtown is located at 38°19′N 76°37′W (38.3167, -76.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Leonardtown’s economy is largely based on government and military jobs. The town is home to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, which is the largest employer in the area. Other major employers include St. Mary’s County Public Schools, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and the St. Mary’s County Government.
The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,930 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,430.8 people per square mile (937.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 983.3 per square mile (379.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 73.2% White, 19.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $54,821, and the median income for a family was $63,958. Males had a median income of $41,964 versus $31,964 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
