La Plata Summary
La Plata, Maryland is a town located in Charles County, Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of Charles County and is located approximately 25 miles south of Washington, D.C. The population of La Plata was 8,753 at the 2010 census.
History
La Plata was founded in 1868 and was named after the Spanish word for silver, in reference to the silver coins that were found in the area. The town was originally known as Charles Town, but the name was changed to La Plata in 1882.
The town was incorporated in 1888 and was the first town in Charles County to be incorporated. The town was originally a farming community, but it has since grown to become a major commercial center in the county.
Geography
La Plata is located at 38°27′N 76°55′W (38.45, -76.92). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all of it land.

La Plata is a major commercial center in Charles County. The town is home to several large businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a Target store. The town is also home to several restaurants, banks, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,753 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,735.3 people per square mile (1,053.7/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 1,026.2 per square mile (396.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $54,844, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,919 for females.
