Cresaptown Summary
Cresaptown is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Cresaptown was first settled in the late 1700s by the Cresap family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally known as Cresap's Town, and was later shortened to Cresaptown. The town was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 1800s, Cresaptown was a thriving industrial center, with several coal mines, a brickyard, and a sawmill. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, and a post office.
Geography
Cresaptown is located at 39°37'17" North, 78°51'45" West (39.6214, -78.8625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Cresaptown is home to a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a number of restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 703.2 people per square mile (271.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 283.2/sq mi (109.4/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.94% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
