Brunswick is a town located in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. It is situated along the Potomac River, approximately 40 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. The population was 5,870 at the 2010 census.

History

Brunswick was founded in 1728 by German immigrants who named it after the German city of Braunschweig. The town was incorporated in 1820 and was the first town in Frederick County to be incorporated. The town was a major stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which connected the town to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. The railroad was a major factor in the town's growth and development.

Geography

Brunswick is located at 39°19'45"N 77°41'45"W (39.3293, -77.6958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Brunswick is home to several businesses, including a number of restaurants, a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a variety of other retail stores. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a printing company, and a plastics manufacturer.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,870 people, 2,521 households, and 1,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 4,902.5 people per square mile (1,892.2/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 2,250.8 per square mile (871.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
