Adelphi Summary

Adelphi is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. It is located just outside the Capital Beltway, about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Washington, D.C. As of the 2010 census, the population of Adelphi was 15,086.

History

Adelphi was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania. The area was originally known as “Quaker Hill” and was part of a larger tract of land known as “The Grove.” In 1854, the area was renamed “Adelphi” after the Greek word for “brotherhood.”
The area was primarily rural until the 1950s, when the construction of the Capital Beltway spurred development. The area was annexed by the City of Hyattsville in 1954, and the Adelphi CDP was established in 1960.

Geography

Adelphi is located at 38°59'25"N 76°56'45"W (38.990278, -76.945556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Adelphi is home to several large employers, including the University of Maryland, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The area is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 15,086 people, 5,845 households, and 3,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,569.2 people per square mile (1,380.2/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 1,457.2 per square mile (563.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 44.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.7% from other races, and 4.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.3% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
