Woodland Summary

Woodland, Maryland is a small town located in Charles County, Maryland. It is situated on the banks of the Potomac River, approximately 25 miles south of Washington, D.C. The town has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area.

History

Woodland was first settled in the early 1700s by English settlers. The town was originally known as “Woodland’s Crossroads” due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. The town was officially incorporated in 1872 and was named after the nearby Woodland Plantation.
In the late 1800s, Woodland was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several farms, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The town’s population decreased and many of the businesses closed. In the 1950s, the town was revitalized when the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) built a water treatment plant in the area. This brought new jobs and economic growth to the town.
