St Leonard Summary

Leonardtown is a town located in St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,193 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Mary's County.

History

The area around Leonardtown was first settled in the early 17th century by English colonists. The town was founded in 1708 and named after Leonard Calvert, the first colonial governor of Maryland. The town was laid out in a grid pattern, with a central square, and was the first town in Maryland to be incorporated by the colonial legislature.
In the late 18th century, Leonardtown was a major port of entry for tobacco and other goods. It was also a center of trade for slaves. During the War of 1812, the town was the site of a major battle between the British and American forces.
In the 19th century, Leonardtown was a center of commerce and industry, with several mills and factories. The town was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North.

Leonardtown is located at 38°19′N 76°37′W (38.3167, -76.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Leonardtown is the county seat of St. Mary's County and is home to many government offices and services. The town is also home to several businesses, including a number of restaurants, shops, and other services.
The town is also home to several large employers, including the St. Mary's County Government, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,193 people, 845 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,400.3 people per square mile (926.2/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 983.2 per square mile (379.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
