Rising Sun Summary

Rising Sun is a town located in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkton Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rising Sun was founded in 1741 by a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Rising Sun Tavern, which was located in the area. The tavern was named after the Rising Sun Inn in London, England. The town was incorporated in 1837.
In the 19th century, the town was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. It was also home to a number of mills, including a paper mill, a grist mill, and a saw mill.

Geography

Rising Sun is located at 39°37′17″N 75°59′45″W (39.6214, -75.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,521.2 people per square mile (973.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 990.2 per square mile (382.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.17% White, 3.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
