Overlea Summary

Overlea is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is located just north of the city of Baltimore and is part of the Baltimore metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Overlea was 8,539.

Geography

Overlea is located at 39°21'17" North, 76°35'17" West (39.354722, -76.588333). It is bordered by the city of Baltimore to the south, Fullerton to the west, and Carney to the east. The northern border of Overlea is formed by the Gunpowder Falls State Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

History

The area that is now Overlea was first settled in the late 1700s by German and English immigrants. The area was originally known as "Overlee" and was part of Baltimore County. In 1868, the area was renamed "Overlea" and was incorporated as a town.
In the early 1900s, Overlea was a rural farming community. The town was home to several small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a post office.
In the 1950s, Overlea began to experience rapid growth as the city of Baltimore expanded. The town was annexed by the city of Baltimore in 1959.

Economy

Overlea is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Baltimore for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,539 people, 3,541 households, and 2,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,717.3 people per square mile (1,437.2/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 1,664.3 per square mile (642.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 13.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
