Greensburg Summary

Greensburg is a small town located in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Choptank River, about 25 miles east of the state capital of Annapolis. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Greensburg was founded in 1790 by William Green, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. He purchased the land from the local Native Americans and named the town after himself. The town was incorporated in 1810 and was the county seat of Caroline County until 1867.
Greensburg was a major port on the Choptank River, and was a center of trade and commerce in the 19th century. It was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North.

Geography

Greensburg is located at 38°45'25" North, 75°51'45" West (38.756944, -75.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Greensburg is a small town with a limited economy. The main industries are agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,009.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 1,155.7 per square mile (446.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 15.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
