Glenmont is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is a suburb of Washington, D.C., located approximately 8 miles north of the city. As of the 2010 census, the population of Glenmont was 11,945.
History
Glenmont was first settled in the late 19th century, when the area was known as “Glenmont Heights.” The area was originally part of the larger community of Wheaton, which was established in 1894. In the early 20th century, the area was developed as a residential suburb of Washington, D.C. The area was annexed by the City of Rockville in 1951, and the name was changed to Glenmont.
Geography
Glenmont is located at 39°3'25"N 77°7'25"W (39.056944, -77.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Glenmont is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several corporate offices, including the headquarters of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 11,945 people, 4,845 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,845.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 64.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
