Georgetown is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the nation’s capital, and has a rich history, geography, economy, and demographics.

History

Georgetown was founded in 1751 by George Gordon, a tobacco planter from Maryland. The area was originally part of the larger Maryland colony, but was ceded to the District of Columbia in 1790. Georgetown quickly became a bustling port town, and was home to a variety of businesses, including a flour mill, a brewery, and a shipyard. The neighborhood was also home to a number of prominent families, including the Custis, the Beall, and the Carroll families.
Georgetown was an important center of commerce and industry during the 19th century. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which opened in 1831, connected Georgetown to the rest of the country, and the neighborhood became a major hub for trade and transportation. The neighborhood also became a popular destination for wealthy Washingtonians, who built grand homes along the waterfront.
Georgetown was annexed by the city of Washington in 1871, and the neighborhood began to decline in the early 20th century. The area was largely neglected by the city, and many of the grand homes were demolished or converted into apartments. The neighborhood began to experience a resurgence in the 1950s, when the city began to invest in the area. Today, Georgetown is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city, and is home to a variety of businesses, restaurants, and shops.
