History

Four Corners was first settled in the late 1700s by German and English immigrants. The area was originally known as “Four Corners Crossroads” due to its location at the intersection of four major roads. The area was largely rural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the development of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. In the 1960s, the area was annexed by Montgomery County and the Four Corners CDP was established in the 1970 census.

Geography

Four Corners is located at 39°3'25" North, 77°9'25" West (39.056944, -77.156944). It is situated at the intersection of four major roads of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area: Interstate 270, Maryland Route 355 (Rockville Pike), Maryland Route 185 (Connecticut Avenue), and Maryland Route 28 (Darnestown Road).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Four Corners is home to a variety of businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The area is also home to several corporate offices, including the headquarters of Marriott International and the National Institutes of Health.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,719 people, 3,541 households, and 2,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,945.3 people per square mile (1,521.7/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 1,717.3 per square mile (662.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $87,917. Males had a median income of $60,938 versus $45,938 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $35,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
