Carney Summary

Carney is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. The population was 20,155 at the 2010 census. Carney is located in the Parkville area of Baltimore County, and is bordered by Loch Raven Boulevard to the north, Putty Hill Avenue to the east, Joppa Road to the south, and Taylor Avenue to the west.

Geography

Carney is located at 39°24'17" North, 76°32'45" West (39.404722, -76.545833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

History

Carney was originally part of the large tract of land known as "Carney's Forest," which was owned by the Carney family. The area was first settled in the late 1700s, and the Carney family owned the land until the early 1900s. The area was then developed into a residential community, and the Carney name was retained.

Economy

Carney is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of medical facilities, including the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 20,155 people, 8,072 households, and 5,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,817.2 people per square mile (1,867.2/km2). There were 8,072 housing units at an average density of 1,937.2 per square mile (746.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 11.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
