Tazewell Summary
Tazewell is a town located in Tazewell County, Virginia, United States. The population was 4,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA micropolitan area which has a population of 107,578.
History
Tazewell was founded in 1799 by William Tazewell, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Virginia House of Delegates. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1838.
Tazewell was the site of the Battle of Tazewell in 1863 during the Civil War. The battle was a Confederate victory and resulted in the capture of Union troops.
Geography
Tazewell is located at 37°10′N 81°30′W (37.17, -81.50). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Tazewell is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,541 people, 1,945 households, and 1,232 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,072.2 people per square mile (800.2/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.45% White, 5.90% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
