Suffolk Summary

Suffolk is an independent city located in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. It is the largest city in the region and the 14th largest in the state. The city is situated on the Nansemond River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Suffolk is bordered by the cities of Chesapeake to the north, Portsmouth to the south, and Virginia Beach to the east.

History

Suffolk was founded in 1742 as a port town on the Nansemond River. The city was named after the county of Suffolk in England. The city was initially a tobacco trading center and was home to a number of plantations. During the American Revolution, the city was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Great Bridge in 1775.
In the 19th century, Suffolk became an important center for the production of naval stores, such as turpentine and rosin. The city was also a major center for the production of peanuts and peanut products. In the early 20th century, Suffolk was a major center for the production of textiles.

Geography

Suffolk is located in southeastern Virginia, in the Hampton Roads region. The city is situated on the Nansemond River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Suffolk is bordered by the cities of Chesapeake to the north, Portsmouth to the south, and Virginia Beach to the east. The city covers an area of approximately 200 square miles and has a population of approximately 90,000.

Economy

Suffolk’s economy is largely based on the service sector, with the city’s largest employers being the military, healthcare, and education. The city is home to several military installations, including Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world. Suffolk is also home to several healthcare facilities, including Sentara Obici Hospital and Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. The city is also home to several educational institutions, including Suffolk Public Schools, Tidewater Community College, and Old Dominion University.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the world’s largest peanut processing plant, Planters Peanuts. Other major employers in the city include Dollar Tree, Smithfield Foods, and the Suffolk Peanut Company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Suffolk had a population of 84,585. The racial makeup of the city was 57.3% White, 33.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,817, and the median income for a family was $60,817. The per capita income for the city was $25,817. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
