History

Radford was founded in 1887 as a railroad town, and was named after Dr. John B. Radford, who was the chief engineer of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1892, and the first mayor was elected in 1893.
Radford was a major industrial center during the early 20th century, with several factories producing textiles, furniture, and other goods. The city was also home to a large military base, Camp Radford, which was established in 1917 and served as a training center for the U.S. Army during World War I. The base was closed in 1921, but the city continued to be an important industrial center until the mid-20th century.

Geography

Radford is located in the New River Valley of southwestern Virginia, about 25 miles west of Roanoke. The city is situated at the confluence of the New and Little Rivers, and is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles, of which 8.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Radford’s economy is largely based on education and healthcare. Radford University is the largest employer in the city, with over 3,000 employees. Other major employers include Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, Radford City Public Schools, and the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
