Pound Summary
Pound is a town located in Wise County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,788 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Big Stone Gap Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Pound was founded in 1883 by the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. The town was named after the nearby Pound River, which was named after the English word for a unit of weight. The town was incorporated in 1891.

Economy
Pound is home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a coal mine, and a furniture factory. The town also has a number of small retail stores and restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (262.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.76% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $22,917, and the median income for a family was $27,917. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $19,375 for females.
