Pearisburg Summary
Pearisburg is a town located in Giles County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,721 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Giles County. The town is named for George Pearis, an early settler who established a ferry on the New River at the site.
History
Pearisburg was founded in 1776 by George Pearis, a settler from North Carolina. He established a ferry on the New River at the site, and the town was named for him. The town was incorporated in 1808.
During the Civil War, Pearisburg was the site of a major battle in May 1864. Confederate forces under General John C. Breckinridge were defeated by Union forces under General George Crook. The battle was part of the Union's campaign to control the Shenandoah Valley.

The racial makeup of the town was 92.45% White, 5.90% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.96% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
