Onley Summary

Onley is a town located in Accomack County, Virginia, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Onley was founded in 1883 by the Onley family, who had moved to the area from North Carolina. The town was named after the family, and the family's name was derived from the Old English word for "meadow".

The town was incorporated in 1887 and the first post office was established in 1888

In the early 1900s, Onley was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of crops being grown in the area. The town also had a number of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a grist mill.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the agricultural industry shifted away from the area. The population decreased, and many of the businesses closed.

Economy

Today, Onley is a small, rural town with a population of just over 500 people. The town is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
The town is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 246 housing units at an average density of 404.2 per square mile (156.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.3% White, 15.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845.
