Keokee Summary
Keokee, Virginia is a small unincorporated community located in Lee County, Virginia. It is situated in the Appalachian Mountains, near the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. The town is located on the banks of the Powell River, and is home to a population of approximately 500 people.
History
Keokee was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Keokee Gap”, and was named after a Cherokee chief who lived in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1891, and was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill.
In the early 1900s, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The railroad was extended to Keokee in 1906, and the town became a popular destination for tourists. The town also became a center for coal mining, and the population grew to over 1,000 people.
