Jonesville Summary

Jonesville is a town located in Lee County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County.

History

Jonesville was founded in 1856 and named for William Jones, a prominent local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1872.
The town was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864, when Confederate forces under General John C. Breckinridge attempted to prevent Union forces under General Stephen G. Burbridge from crossing the Clinch River. The Union forces were successful in crossing the river and the battle resulted in a Confederate retreat.

The economy of Jonesville is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2).
