Iron Gate Summary

Gate, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is situated in the northern part of the state, near the border of West Virginia. The town is located in the county of Augusta, and is part of the Staunton-Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Iron Gate was estimated to be 545 in the year 2000.

History

Iron Gate was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Iron Gate” due to the iron gates that were placed at the entrance of the town. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
Iron Gate was a major stop on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which ran through the town from 1881 to 1971. The railway was a major source of employment for the town, and it also helped to bring in tourists and other visitors.
