Hillsville Summary
Hillsville is a town located in Carroll County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,681 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carroll County.
History
Hillsville was founded in 1837 and named for William Hill, a local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1876.
During the Civil War, Hillsville was the site of the Battle of Hillsville, which took place on March 15, 1862. The battle was a Confederate victory, and resulted in the death of Union General William "Baldy" Smith.

Economy
Hillsville is home to several businesses, including a furniture factory, a lumber mill, and a number of small retail stores. The town is also home to a number of restaurants, including a popular local diner.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,541 people, 1,072 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,150.2 people per square mile (445.2/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 531.2 per square mile (205.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.71% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945.
