Haysi Summary
Haysi is a town located in Dickenson County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kingsport–Bristol (TN)–Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.
History
Haysi was founded in the late 19th century as a coal mining town. The town was named after the Haysi River, which runs through the area. The town was incorporated in 1912.
In the early 20th century, Haysi was a bustling coal mining town. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Haysi Coal Company, which operated from 1912 to the mid-1920s. The town also had a number of stores, a hotel, a post office, and a school.
In the late 1920s, the coal industry began to decline in the area, and the town's population began to decline as well. By the mid-20th century, the town had become a small, rural community.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Haysi's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, as well as a number of tourist attractions, including the Haysi Dam, which is a popular fishing spot.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.2 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.17% White, 0.73% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $25,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,945. About 20.2% of families and 24.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.3% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
