Haysi Summary
Haysi is a town located in Dickenson County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kingsport–Bristol (TN)–Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.
History
Haysi was founded in the late 19th century as a coal mining town. The town was named after the Haysi River, which runs through the area. The town was incorporated in 1912.
In the early 20th century, Haysi was a bustling coal mining town. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Haysi Coal Company, which operated from 1912 to the mid-1920s. The town also had a number of stores, a hotel, a post office, and a school.
In the late 1920s, the coal industry began to decline in the area, and the town's population began to decline as well. By the mid-20th century, the town had become a small, rural community.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.17% White, 0.73% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
