Gordonsville Summary

Gordonsville is a town located in Orange County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,520 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Gordonsville was founded in 1819 by Joseph Gordon, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1859. During the Civil War, the town was a major railroad junction and was the site of a major battle in 1864. After the war, the town was rebuilt and continued to grow.

Geography

Gordonsville is located at 38°7′17″N 78°10′17″W (38.1214, -78.1714). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Gordonsville’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several wineries, as well as a number of antique shops and other small businesses. The town is also home to a number of historic sites, including the Gordonsville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,521 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,269.2 people per square mile (490.2/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 571.2 per square mile (221.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.17% White, 18.45% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 8.7% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
