Ebony Summary

Ebony is an unincorporated community located in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. It is situated along the Appomattox River, approximately 20 miles south of Petersburg. The community is part of the Richmond-Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Ebony was first settled in the early 1700s by English colonists. The community was originally known as “Ebony Grove” and was named after a large grove of ebony trees that grew in the area. The community was officially established in 1820 and was home to a number of small farms.
In the late 1800s, the area began to experience a period of growth and development. The Appomattox and Petersburg Railroad was built through the area in 1881, connecting Ebony to Petersburg and other nearby towns. This allowed for the easy transportation of goods and people, and helped to spur economic growth in the area.
In the early 1900s, Ebony was home to a number of businesses, including a general store, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill. The community also had a school, which was attended by both white and black students.
