Annandale Summary
Annandale is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 41,008 at the 2010 census. Annandale is located in the Washington metropolitan area and is part of the Northern Virginia region.
History
The area now known as Annandale was first settled in the early 1700s by Scottish immigrants. The area was originally known as "Little Scotland" and was home to a large number of Scottish immigrants. The area was later renamed Annandale after the Annan River in Scotland.
In the late 1800s, the area began to grow rapidly as the Washington, D.C. area began to expand. The area was annexed by Fairfax County in the early 1900s and became a part of the Washington metropolitan area.
Geography
Annandale is located at 38°49′N 77°11′W (38.817, -77.183). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Annandale is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of government agencies, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Institutes of Health.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 41,008 people, 16,845 households, and 10,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,919.3 people per square mile (1,902.2/km2). There were 17,717 housing units at an average density of 2,133.3/sq mi (822.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 18.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 15.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 4.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
There were 16,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $76,845. Males had a median income of $50,845 versus $41,845 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $30,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
