Woodlawn Cdp is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Carroll County, Virginia. It is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 20 miles east of Roanoke. The population of Woodlawn Cdp was 1,845 at the time of the 2000 census.

History

The area that is now Woodlawn Cdp was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Scots-Irish immigrants. The first settlers were primarily farmers, and the area was known as “Woodlawn” due to the abundance of trees in the area. The area was officially established as a CDP in 2000.

Geography

Woodlawn Cdp is located at 37°17'25" North, 80°25'45" West (37.290278, -80.429167). It has an elevation of 1,845 feet (562 m). The CDP covers an area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of which is land.

Economy

The economy of Woodlawn Cdp is primarily based on agriculture. The area is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, and tobacco. The area also has several small businesses, including a gas station, a grocery store, and a hardware store.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 441.3 people per square mile (170.3/km2). There were 771 housing units at an average density of 184.3/sq mi (71.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
