History

Stafford Courthouse was first established in 1798 as the county seat of Stafford County. The courthouse was built in 1804 and is still in use today. The town was named after the county, which was named after Staffordshire, England.
The town was an important stop on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, which ran from Alexandria to Orange Court House. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The town was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, which was used by slaves to escape to freedom in the North. The town was home to several prominent abolitionists, including William Lloyd Garrison and Harriet Tubman.
