Newington is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,769 at the 2010 census. It is located near the city of Alexandria and is part of the Washington metropolitan area.

History

Newington was first settled in the early 1700s by English settlers. The area was originally known as "Newington Crossroads" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1845, the area was renamed "Newington" after the English town of the same name.
In the late 1800s, the area began to develop as a residential community. The first post office was established in 1891 and the first school was built in 1895. The area continued to grow throughout the 20th century, with the population reaching 12,769 by the 2010 census.

Geography

Newington is located in northern Fairfax County, Virginia, at 38°48′N 77°10′W (38.79, -77.17). It is bordered to the north by the city of Alexandria, to the east by Franconia, to the south by Springfield, and to the west by Kingstowne.

Economy

Newington is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 12,769 people, 4,945 households, and 3,541 families living in the CDP. The population density was 3,039.2 people per square mile (1,174.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 1,219.2 per square mile (470.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,945, and the median income for a family was $86,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $32,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.
