Gainesville Summary

Gainesville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,086 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is located in the Washington metropolitan area, approximately 30 miles (48 km) west of Washington, D.C.

Geography

Gainesville is located at 38°45′N 77°31′W (38.75, -77.52). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

History

Gainesville was first settled in the early 19th century. The area was originally known as Gaines Crossroads, named after the Gaines family who owned a large plantation in the area. The area was later renamed Gainesville after the Civil War.
In the late 19th century, the area was home to a large number of farms and small businesses. The area was also home to a number of churches, including the Gainesville Baptist Church, which was founded in 1871.
In the early 20th century, the area began to experience rapid growth as the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area expanded. The area was annexed by Prince William County in the 1950s.

Economy

Gainesville is home to a number of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of corporate offices, including those of the defense contractor Northrop Grumman.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,481 people, 4,072 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,399.3 people per square mile (539.9/km2). There were 4,213 housing units at an average density of 511.7/sq mi (197.6/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.17% White, 11.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 5.90% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 4,072 households, out of which 43.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 4.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,945, and the median income for a family was $81,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $30,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
