Granger Summary
Granger is a census-designated place located in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the South Bend–Mishawaka, IN-MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 15,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Granger was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from Granger, New York. The town was originally called Harris Prairie, but was later renamed Granger after the original settlers’ hometown. The town was officially incorporated in 1851.
In the late 19th century, Granger was a major stop on the Michigan Central Railroad. The railroad brought many new businesses to the area, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.
Geography
Granger is located at 41°44'25" North, 86°14'45" West (41.740278, -86.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all land.
Economy
Granger is home to several large employers, including the University of Notre Dame, Memorial Hospital, and the South Bend Community School Corporation. The town also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 15,845 people, 6,093 households, and 4,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,912.3 people per square mile (737.3/km2). There were 6,521 housing units at an average density of 786.3 per square mile (303.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 6,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $72,917. Males had a median income of $50,917 versus $35,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $29,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
