Stockwell Summary
Stockwell is a small unincorporated community located in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. It is situated in the northwest corner of the county, approximately 8 miles northwest of Lafayette. The population of Stockwell was estimated to be around 500 in 2020.
History
Stockwell was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after a local landowner, John Stockwell. The first post office was established in 1838 and the first school was built in 1845.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a grist mill.
In the late 1800s, Stockwell was also home to a large number of German immigrants. These immigrants brought with them their culture and traditions, which are still evident in the town today.
