St John Summary

St. John is a town located in Lake County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located approximately 25 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. The population was 14,850 at the 2010 census.

History

St. John was first settled in 1834 by a group of German immigrants led by John Stauffer. The town was originally called Stauffer’s Settlement, but was later changed to St. John in 1837. The town was officially incorporated in 1851.
St. John was a rural farming community until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the expansion of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town experienced a population boom in the 1970s and 1980s, and the population has continued to grow since then.

Geography

St. John is located at 41°27′N 87°30′W (41.45, -87.50). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

St. John is a bedroom community for Chicago, with many of its residents commuting to the city for work. The town is home to several large employers, including the St. John Medical Center, the St. John Fire Department, and the St. John Police Department. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,850 people, 5,717 households, and 4,072 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,811.2 people per square mile (699.7/km2). There were 5,945 housing units at an average density of 725.2 per square mile (280.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.7% Asian, 2.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $72,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females.
