Speedway Summary

Speedway, Indiana is a town located in Marion County, Indiana, United States. It is a suburb of Indianapolis and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population was 11,812 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Speedway was originally inhabited by the Miami tribe of Native Americans. The first settlers arrived in the area in the early 19th century. The town was originally known as “Smocktown” after the Smock family, who were among the first settlers. The town was renamed Speedway in 1926 when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built nearby.

Geography

Speedway is located at 39°47'17" North, 86°15'13" West (39.7881, -86.2537). According to the 2010 census, Speedway has a total area of 4.49 square miles (11.63 km2), of which 4.48 square miles (11.60 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.

Economy

Speedway is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is the world’s largest sporting facility. The Speedway is the site of the Indianapolis 500, the world’s largest single-day sporting event. The Speedway also hosts the Brickyard 400, the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, and the MotoGP Indianapolis Grand Prix. The Speedway is also home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which houses a collection of historic race cars and memorabilia.
The town is also home to several other businesses, including the Indianapolis International Airport, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 11,812 people, 4,945 households, and 3,072 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,631.2 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 5,521 housing units at an average density of 1,228.2 per square mile (473.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,906, and the median income for a family was $54,912. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $23,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
