Southport Summary
Southport is a small city located in Marion County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is located just south of the city of Indianapolis. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Southport was founded in 1837 by William Conner and his family. Conner was a trader and a leader of the Delaware Indians who had been relocated to the area. He built a trading post and a ferry service on the White River, which was used to transport goods and people between Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. The town was originally known as "Conner's Station" and was later renamed Southport.
In 1851, the first post office was established in Southport. The town was incorporated in 1871 and the first mayor was elected in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Southport was a popular destination for people looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It was known for its quiet atmosphere and its proximity to the White River.
Geography
Southport is located at 39°41'17" North, 86°10'45" West (39.688, -86.179). According to the 2010 census, Southport has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Southport's economy is largely based on retail and services. The city is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services. The city also has a few industrial businesses, such as a metal fabrication plant and a printing company.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in Southport. The population density was 2,179.2 people per square mile (841.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 902.3 per square mile (348.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
