History

Porter was founded in 1834 by William Porter, a settler from New York. The town was originally called Portersville, but the name was changed to Porter in 1837. The town was incorporated in 1839.
Porter was a major stop on the Michigan Central Railroad, which ran through the town from 1852 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

Geography

Porter is located at 41°37'25"N 87°7'25"W (41.623607, -87.123590). According to the 2010 census, Porter has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
