Paragon Summary

Paragon is a small town located in Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

History

Paragon was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after the Greek word for "perfection". The first post office was established in 1838.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a center for the production of brick and tile. The brick and tile industry was the main source of employment for the town until the mid-20th century.

Geography

Paragon is located at 39°37′N 86°17′W (39.619, -86.283). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Paragon's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 778.3 per square mile (300.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
