Lawrence Summary

Lawrence is a city located in Marion County, Indiana, United States. It is a part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is located just east of the city of Indianapolis. The population of Lawrence was 46,001 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Marion County after Indianapolis.

History

The area that is now Lawrence was first settled in 1820 by a group of Quakers from North Carolina. The town was originally called Lanesville, after one of the original settlers, but was later renamed Lawrence in honor of the War of 1812 naval hero, James Lawrence. The town was officially incorporated in 1849.
In the late 19th century, Lawrence was a major center of industry, with several factories and mills located in the area. The city was also home to a large number of immigrants, many of whom worked in the factories and mills.

Geography

Lawrence is located at 39°51′N 86°10′W (39.851, -86.167). According to the 2010 census, Lawrence has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Lawrence is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the Indianapolis International Airport, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Indiana University School of Medicine. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 46,001 people, 17,945 households, and 11,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,845.3 people per square mile (1,098.7/km2). There were 19,845 housing units at an average density of 1,223.3 per square mile (471.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 17,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
