Lagrange is a city located in LaGrange County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of LaGrange County. The population was 8,082 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northeastern part of Indiana, near the Michigan border.

History

The area that is now LaGrange was first settled in 1832 by William B. Milroy. The town was originally called Milroy, but was later changed to LaGrange in 1836. The name was chosen in honor of the Marquis de La Fayette, who had visited the area in 1825.
The town was officially incorporated in 1837. In 1844, the first railroad line was built through LaGrange, connecting it to Fort Wayne and Chicago. This helped to spur the growth of the town, and by 1850, the population had grown to 1,400.
In 1853, the first bank in LaGrange was established. The town continued to grow, and by 1880, the population had grown to 3,000.
In the late 19th century, LaGrange became a center for the manufacture of wagons and carriages. The town was also home to several other industries, including a foundry, a flour mill, and a furniture factory.

LaGrange is located at 41°27'N 85°19'W (41.45, -85.32). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all land.

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,082 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,876.2 people per square mile (724.2/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 763.2 per square mile (294.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
