Freetown Summary

Freetown is a small town located in Jackson County, Indiana, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Freetown was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after the Free State of North Carolina, which was a short-lived republic that existed from 1776 to 1789. The town was originally known as "Free Town" but the name was later changed to Freetown.

The first post office in Freetown was established in 1838 The town was incorporated in 1845

In the late 19th century, Freetown was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.

Geography

Freetown is located at 39°14'25" North, 86°2'25" West (39.240278, -86.040278). The town is situated in the southeastern part of Jackson County, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis.
The town is located in a rural area, with rolling hills and wooded areas. The town is surrounded by farmland, with corn and soybean fields being the predominant crops.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
