Franklin Summary

Franklin, Indiana is a city located in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population was 23,712 at the 2010 census. Franklin is the county seat of Johnson County.

History

Franklin was founded in 1823 by General John Tipton and named after Benjamin Franklin. The city was platted in 1824 and incorporated in 1835. The first post office in Franklin was established in 1826.
The city was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North. In 1831, the first public school in Johnson County was established in Franklin.

Geography

Franklin is located at 39°31′N 86°4′W (39.5179, -86.0667). According to the 2010 census, Franklin has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Franklin is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is home to several large employers, including Cummins, Inc., Johnson Memorial Hospital, and Franklin College.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,712 people, 8,845 households, and 5,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,687.3 people per square mile (1,037.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 1,077.3 per square mile (416.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,906, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
