History

Edgewood was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby Edgewood Creek. The first post office was established in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Edgewood is located at 40°6′17″N 85°41′17″W (40.104722, -85.688056). According to the 2010 census, Edgewood has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all land.

Edgewood is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a plastics plant and a metal fabrication plant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,811.8 people per square mile (700.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
