Decatur Summary

Decatur is a city located in Adams County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Adams County and is located along the St. Marys River. The population of Decatur was 9,405 at the 2010 census.

History

Decatur was founded in 1836 by General John Tipton, a veteran of the War of 1812. The city was named after Commodore Stephen Decatur, a naval hero of the War of 1812. Decatur was incorporated as a town in 1837 and as a city in 1853.
The city was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in Canada. The city was also the site of the first public school in Indiana, which opened in 1839.

Geography

Decatur is located at 40°48'25" North, 84°56'17" West (40.806944, -84.938056). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), of which 5.2 square miles (13.5 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Decatur's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including the Decatur Foundry, Decatur Plastics, and Decatur Milling. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 9,405 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,797.3 people per square mile (695.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 786.2 per square mile (303.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
