History
Covington was founded in 1826 by William Covington, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Covington Station, and was the first county seat of Fountain County. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.
Covington was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was completed in 1853. The canal brought economic growth to the town, and it became a center for trade and commerce. The canal was eventually abandoned in the late 19th century, and the town's economy shifted to agriculture.
Geography
Covington is located at 40°17'25"N 87°20'45"W (40.290278, -87.345833). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all land.

Covington's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a plastics plant and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,811.8 people per square mile (700.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 800.2 per square mile (308.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
